Begin with the laboratory method

Culture media should be selected against the validated or adopted method, target organism, sample type and incubation conditions. A broad product-family match is not enough when formulation, selectivity or performance criteria differ.

Choose the correct format

• Dehydrated medium for controlled preparation in the laboratory.
• Prepared bottled or tubed medium for a defined workflow.
• Ready-to-use plates or other formats where preparation and fill volume are supplied.
• Supplements, selective agents or confirmation reagents required by the complete method.

Quality-control evidence

Define which growth-promotion, selectivity, inhibition, sterility or physical checks are required by the method and quality system. Review lot-specific evidence where required rather than assuming every product in a family has identical performance documentation.

• Match product name, catalogue reference and lot across label and certificate.
• Check test organisms, acceptance criteria and reported results.
• Confirm preparation instructions, final pH and incubation conditions.

Storage, transport and useful shelf life

Temperature excursions, moisture, light and time can affect prepared and dehydrated media differently. Confirm transport conditions, storage range, expiry and any post-opening or post-preparation limits before ordering.

• Exact medium, required format, pack size and quantity.
• Supplements and other method components.
• Required certificate or lot-specific quality-control records.
• Delivery country, temperature conditions and minimum remaining shelf life.
